29-year-old Dominik Koepfer overcame an out-of-sorts Frances Tiafoe in three sets on Wednesday to claim one of the biggest results of his career and he will move inside the top 50 for the first time for his efforts. The German has worked hard on the Challenger circuit over the past 12 months to repair his ranking after a tough injury absence and it looks to have paid off, with this his second quarter-final at tour-level in February. World number seven Holger Rune was tested in his first set with Aleksandar Kovacevic before coming through relatively unscathed. The 20-year-old joined back up with coach Patrick Mouratoglou this week, after a madcap series of appointments and splits over the past few months, and he looks solid so far – if not entirely convincing. The Dane should be winning this first encounter in straight sets at his best but given Koepfer’s current level taking Rune to win outright is the suitably cautious move.
