THE PREDICTION
Defending Monte-Carlo Open champion Stefanos Tsitsipas won his first Masters title here last season as part of a dominant clay swing that saw him reach his first and only Grand Slam final to date. A capitulation from two sets up in Paris to eventual champion Novak Djokovic greatly affected the rest of the 23-year-old’s season but he has steadily improved after surgery over the winter break and he looks as assured as he has in some time back in Monte-Carlo. Two straight-set victories over excellent players on clay in Fabio Fognini and Laslo Djere are good warm-ups for what should be his toughest test yet against world number 16 Diego Schwartzman. 29-year-old Schwartzman has twice come back from a set down to oust tough players this week in Karen Khachanov and most recently Lorenzo Musetti and he claimed a career-best ranking win over Tsitsipas at the ATP Cup back in January.
However, Tsitsipas should find the extra gear as a defending champion to overcome the Argentine in what could easily be a three-set thriller or a comprehensive shutdown. Either way, back the Greek to find a way through.
