World number 13 Diego Schwartzman looked in excellent form in a straight-sets victory over Filip Krajinovic on Tuesday, breaking the Serb eight times in a combative test. The 29-year-old recently claimed a career-best victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas at the ATP Cup as well as ousting Nikoloz Basilashvili for three games. The former world number eight was in imperious form late last season and he should be able to emulate his best showing here of a round of 16 exit. His best overall came in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros back in 2020.
CHRISTOPHER O’CONNELL
World number 175 Christopher O’Connell is the lowest-ranked man left in the draw at the Australian Open after earning his right to a wildcard with a four-set victory over Hugo Gaston. The 27-year-old has previously reached the second round of two Grand Slams, at the 2020 US Open and last season here, with two five-set losses in the first round of last season’s Roland-Garros and Wimbledon.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a relatively straightforward affair for world number 13 Diego Schwartzman with the Argentine in such great hardcourt form. The five-set format gives Christopher O’Connell plenty of time to force something here and he will be well-backed as an Aussie underdog but Schwartzman’s dogged determination should diffuse most of his opponents’ weapons. Take Schwartzman to win outright inside an accumulator or in straight sets on its own.
