THE PREDICTION

31-year-old Madison Brengle was forced to retire from her quarter-final in Adelaide this week but she looks set to play the first round here. The world number 54 already has three wins on the board for 2022 and her best Grand Slam showing came here back in 2015 where she made the second week. Former world number 21 Dayana Yastremska was banned for six months of last season under a controversial substances misuse charge and the Ukrainian has plummeted down the rankings since her return in June. The 21-year-old should be able to return to the top 30 one day soon with three WTA titles to her name already and a round of 16 exit at Wimbledon in 2019 suggesting big things. Hard-working Brengle was the winner of their only previous encounter in straight sets at the US Open back in 2020 and her better form so far this season suggests the American is the slightest favourite here. Take Brengle to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners.
