DARIA SAVILLE
28-year-old Daria Saville cut more than 150 places off of her WTA ranking by reaching the round of 16 at Indian Wells last week, where she was forced to retire in the first set against Maria Sakkari. The former world number 20 can break back into the top 200 with a win here after beating Greet Minnen in straight sets in the first round.
SIMONA HALEP
World number 19 Simona Halep lost in the semi-finals of Indian Wells last week to eventual champion Iga Swiatek in a welcome return to her calibre of performances. The 30-year-old won her 23rd WTA title, and her first since Dubai in 2020, at Melbourne 1 back in January after spending much of last season returning from a long injury lay-off. Halep owns six Masters titles but her best showing is two semi-final exits in 2015 and 2019.
THE PREDICTION
Daria Saville’s rampant return to form after several seasons largely away from the tour will be an entertaining spectacle over the next few months but the Aussie is unlikely to shock Simona Halep here. This is the fifth meeting between the two with all five of their encounters coming at Masters level, their last at the 2016 Cincinnati Open when Saville was known by her maiden name Daria Gavrilova. Halep leads their head-to-head record 3-1 so far and on the basis of her stellar run at Indian Wells she should be taking that to 4-1 in relative comfort. It would not be a big surprise to see Saville snatch a set, although realistically this should come in straight sets for the former world number one.
