World number 28 Daria Kasatkina was challenged more than she would have expected by wildcard Katie Volynets on Friday but she eventually came through in three sets. The 24-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 10th back in 2018 where she finished runner-up to Naomi Osaka at Indian Wells. The Russian won the fourth title of her career at the St. Petersburg Open last season.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber won the first match of her covid-19 disrupted season on Friday with a three-set battle against Qinwen Zheng. The 34-year-old won the 13th title of her career, and a first since 2018, at the Bad Homburg Open last season. Kerber is yet to win a Masters title as a three-time runner up, including at Indian Wells to Bianca Andreescu in 2019, but the 2019 Australian Open, US Open and 2018 Wimbledon trophies should suffice.
THE PREDICTION
Angelique Kerber will face Daria Kasatkina in the third round of Indian Wells in back-to-back seasons after beating the Russian in three sets here last October. The German leads this storied head-to-head 5-4 with three wins from their last four meetings – each coming in three sets. Kerber has struggled for rhythm this season after contracting covid-19 right on the eve of it but a first win should boost her confidence. Kasatkina is an enigmatic player on tour who probably has the form to win this match with her last four defeats coming against top 10 players, so backing the Russian to win at least one and leaving the winner up to chance looks the sensible move here.
