World number seven Daniil Medvedev took a tight first set tiebreak from Lorenzo Sonego before the Italian was forced to retire on Tuesday. The 26-year-old lost all three of his ATP Finals bouts in very tight circumstances to Andrey Rublev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and eventual champion Novak Djokovic but he only recently won the Vienna Open amongst a high-quality field and it should not take him long to get back into top gear on tour. World number 29 Miomir Kecmanovic beat Christopher O’Connell in straight sets to get his Adelaide campaign underway and it will be fascinating to see if the Serb can build on what was the best season of his career in 2022. The 23-year-old may never have a better chance at beating Medvedev than right at this moment but the Russian beat him twice in straight sets last season and he can be backed to reach the quarter-finals as the outright winner.
