THE PREDICTION
This promises to be one of the best matches of an incredible day of tennis at Indian Wells, with plenty of aggro expected between world number four Daniil Medvedev and number seven Holger Rune. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head after two clashes on clay last spring, with Rune beating Medvedev in straight sets at the Monte-Carlos Masters before Medvedev returned the favour in Rome to claim his 20th ATP title and a first on clay to complete his surfaces collection. 28-year-old Medvedev beat Grigor Dimitrov in two on Wednesday to look dialled-in to likely emulate his run to the final here last season, where he finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz, but his best result of the campaign was a three-set victory over bogey player Sebastian Korda.
20-year-old Rune grabbed his best result of the season with an impressive comeback over Taylor Fritz later on Wednesday but the Dane has not beaten a top 10 player (barring an injury to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the ATP Finals) since ousting Casper Ruud in Rome last May in the semi-finals before his loss to Medvedev. Rune is improving under new/ex-coach Patrick Mouratoglou but back Medvedev to have too much for him at this moment in time.
