THE LOWDOWN

DANIIL MEDVEDEV

26-year-old Daniil Medvedev made short work of Tomas Machac in the second round of Indian Wells and he requires two more rounds in the desert to maintain his world number one status over Novak Djokovic. The Russian won the US Open last season in one of his now four Grand Slam finals, with his defeat to Rafael Nadal in five sets at the Australian Open back in January the latest of likely many more. Medvedev owns four Masters titles but he still requires Indian Wells and the Miami Open to complete the North American set.

GAEL MONFILS

Former world number six Gael Monfils beat Filip Krajinovic in comfortable straight sets on Saturday in his first match back since a loss to Matteo Berrettini in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. The 35-year-old started the season off on fire with a first title in two years at Adelaide 1 and it remains to be seen if he can push on this season after some stunning tennis in Melbourne.

THE PREDICTION

Medvedev and Monfils claimed a win apiece in two meetings back in 2019, both semi-finals, with Medvedev going on to win the Sofia Open and Monfils the Rotterdam Open. Since then, however, Medvedev’s level has risen several floors to the penthouse suite as world number one and his new and improved game will likely be too much for the Frenchman. Monfils on his best day could frustrate the Russian to no end and force a decider but it is likeliest that Medvedev comes through in two here.
