THE PREDICTION

World number six Daniil Medvedev recovered from a potential ankle injury suffered in the round of 16 to beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets in the quarter-finals. The 27-year-old made it 18 wins on the spin on Wednesday as he continues to enjoy a welcome return to form after a poor 2022 season by his standards and he is two matches away from making it four titles in a row after winning in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai. World number 16 Frances Tiafoe looks a creditable threat here, though, after he locked-in for a straight-sets victory over former champion Cam Norrie on Wednesday. The 25-year-old had enjoyed a relatively comfortable draw up to the quarter-finals but to reaching the semis without dropping a set is a real statement of intent for the American. Medvedev has been vocal of his heavy dislike for the conditions at Indian Wells and Tiafoe can use that and a partisan atmosphere to his advantage here but he will have to beat the Russian for the first time after losing each of their four previous encounters.

This is a tricky call because Tiafoe has everything he needs to succeed here and this match will rest heavily on how Medvedev reacts, or better still does not react, to the partisan crowd. The suitably cautious move is taking Medvedev to win at least a set but consider taking that option in favour of Tiafoe instead.
