Sonay Kartal ended the season with one of her strongest runs at a tournament as she reached the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in Beijing. The Brit picked up fine wins over Maya Joint and Mirra Andreeva before her run ended against Linda Noskova. She also made the round-of-16 at both Indian Wells and Wimbledon. Kartal is ranked 68 in the world ahead of the 2026 season.
Janice Tjen also enjoyed a fine end to 2025 as she picked up a WTA title in Chennai. She enjoyed plenty of success at lower-level events last season, winning eight titles in total, and she is now up to 54 in the world. Her record on outdoor hard courts was incredibly strong last year, as she won 72 matches out of a possible 87, giving her an 83% win rate.
Kartal is a tough competitor, but she has been handed a tough start in Auckland. Tjen is coming off a fine season and may just have enough quality to squeeze through on this occasion.
