28-year-old Danielle Collins will break the top 10 for the first time after beating Anna Bondar in three sets on Thursday to reach the third round of the Miami Open. The current world number 11 finished runner-up to Ash Barty at the Australian Open back in January to rise up the rankings but she also won her first two WTA titles last season back-to-back at the Palermo Open and Silicon Valley Classic.
VERA ZVONAREVA
Former world number two Vera Zvonareva stunned 19th seed Tamara Zidansek in two comfortable sets on Thursday to continue a surprise run at the Miami Open. The 37-year-old veteran won the most recent of her 12 career WTA titles more than a decade ago at the Qatar Open but she owns two Masters titles from Indian Wells in 2009 and the Cincinnati Open in 2006.
THE PREDICTION
Vera Zvonareva has twice made short work of being underestimated at the Miami Open but Danielle Collins is a significantly tougher test than her first two opponents in the American’s current form. Furthermore, Collins has won both of their previous meetings in straight sets at Indian Wells in 2018 and the Madrid Open a year later. The Russian’s surprise form and Collins’ second round wobble makes taking the Australian Open finalist to win outright look a reasonable compromise here.
