THE PREDICTION
Both 33-year-old Dan Evans and 28-year-old Lorenzo Sonego set career-high ATP world rankings of 21st in recent seasons, Sonego doing so in 2021 and Evans last August after the Brit picked up a first ATP 500 title with an incredible campaign at the Washington Open. Evans endured a season of two halves last year but a purple patch in the late summer saw him stun Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov en-route to his most prestigious title before a remarkable turn for Great Britain at the Davis Cup group stages in Manchester in both singles and doubles.
Sonego has struggled to find his exciting best level consistently enough in recent seasons but he is far better than his current ranking of 46th suggests and he put in an excellent comeback against Evans at the Miami Open last March to take a 2-0 lead in their head-to-head. Take the Italian to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors, both of whom are dangerous unseeded players this fortnight, or both to win at least one in a likely marathon clash.
