THE PREDICTION

27-year-old Yoshihito Nishioka is seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time at a career-high ATP world ranking of 33rd after bursting into the form of his life late last summer. The Japanese number one stunned five top 40 players at the Citi Open in Washington before coming unstuck in the final against Nick Kyrgios but he claimed the second title of his career later at the Korea Open, beating Denis Shapovalov and Casper Ruud en-route. 20-year-old Dalbor Svrcina won on his Grand Slam debut in a surprising three-setter over Jaume Munar and the Czech will be a tough force to stop after a solid route through qualifying. Svrcina has nothing to lose in this biggest day of his career so far and four sets seem likelier than three here but Nishioka’s game is the epitome of ‘tricky’ and first meetings with players outside the top 30 tend to go his way. Back Nishioka to reach the third round as an outright winner.
