THE PREDICTION
Both world number 65 Constant Lestienne and number 88 Gregoire Barrere are close to breaking their respective career-high rankings after strong opening wins in Auckland, with Barrere especially impressing in a comeback victory over John Isner. Both Frenchmen are one the journey from the Challenger circuit over to full-time ATP tour tennis but Lestienne is likely already there after an excellent end to 2022 saw him reach the semi-final of the Tel Aviv 500 event. Wins over the likes of Maxime Cressy and Emil Ruusuvuori in Tel Aviv suggest the 26-year-old can break the top 50 this season but Barrere’s survival of a serving onslaught from Isner must not be underestimated. The pair have met nine times below tour level but Lestienne won a Challenger title at Barrere’s expense last July and backing him to take at least a set here as the likelier of two capable victors looks the sensible way to avoid picking a winner.
