THE PREDICTION
18-year-old Coco Gauff will be a teenage sensation for one more year yet and already the American has set a career-high WTA world ranking of fourth, qualified for the singles and doubles at the year-end WTA Finals and, perhaps most impressively, finished runner-up at Roland-Garros to Iga Swiatek. The current world number seven looks the stand-out candidate to claim her third WTA title this weekend but she faces a former American sensation, and former world number four, in 24-year-old Sofia Kenin. The current world number 227 won her first Grand Slam title at 21 years old this time three years ago at the Australian Open, beating Gauff in three sets there in the round of 16, and soon after that also experienced finishing runner-up to Swiatek at Roland-Garros before her career began to fall off the rails. After a prolonged absence due to many unfortunate factors and injuries there were brief signs that the American was on her way back to a competitive level late last season.
This second meeting looks way too soon for Kenin but it should be a fascinating match after her excellent comeback against Xinyu Wang in the first round. Back Gauff to take this in straight sets but this could come closer than it first appears.
