THE PREDICTION

World number two Aryna Sabalenka has lost just one match this season to Barbora Krejcikova at the Dubai Masters last month and she righted that particular wrong with a three-set victory over the Czech on Tuesday. The 24-year-old won her first two tournaments of the season including her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and she looks the reasonable title favourite alongside the defending champion Iga Swiatek at this stage. World number six Coco Gauff was not at her best until it mattered yesterday in a three-set victory over Rebecca Peterson but she fares more of a chance than first appears here as she comes into this quarter-final with a surprisingly strong 3-1 lead in their head-to-head record. The teenager, now 19 years old as of Monday, most recently beat an out-of-sorts but recovering Sabalenka in three tight sets at the Canada Masters and she has notably won at least a set in all four of their encounters. However, Sabalenka is at the peak of her powers right now. Gauff’s record makes backing the Belarussian to win outright the suitably cautious move here even though on Tuesday’s results the Australian Open champion should take this in two.
