World number 76 Clara Tauson continues to struggle to find enough consistent form, and fitness, to get back up to and beyond her career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd set early last season. The 20-year-old is very much still a clear future star with two WTA titles to her name already but there have been more complications than expected so far after an incredible breakthrough season in 2021. A straight-sets opener over Elina Avanesyan is promising in Ningbo but the Dane should be treated with caution for some time to come. Former world number two Vera Zvonareva stunned seventh seed Katie Boulter in three tight sets on Monday to prove her staying power on tour at 39 years old but the veteran spends the vast majority of her time in doubles these days. Zvonareva will be motivated to beat a rising star here but Tauson should, realistically, be able to take this clash in straight sets.
