26-year-old Christopher Eubanks set a career-high ATP world ranking of 120th late last season and he is set to break that no matter the outcome here after beating Ugo Humbert, defending champion from three years ago, in two tiebreaks. The American qualified well this weekend in a continuation of the form that saw him reach back-to-back finals on the Challenger circuit in November and there is certainly the scent of an upset in this first meeting with David Goffin given the Belgian’s intermittent form. World number 53 Goffin lost both of his United Cup rubbers to Stefanos Tsitsipas and Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets but he beat Alexander Bublik in two to open his Auckland account well. The former world number seven has struggled with consistency for much of the last two seasons and this match is definitely worth keeping away from an accumulator. Doing so opens up the option to take Eubanks to earn at least a set here but the suitably cautious call is to take that option in Goffin’s favour.
