World number three Casper Ruud beat Thiago Monteiro and lost to Matteo Berrettini at the United Cup last time out for a middling start to 2023 but it will be a big ask to improve on his incredible 2022. The 24-year-old finished runner-up at Roland-Garros to Rafael Nadal and the US Open to Carlos Alcaraz, to whom he also lost a first Masters final in Miami, in a season that saw him add three more ATP 250 titles to his collection of nine and it will be fascinating to see if he can push on from here. World number 70 Laslo Djere beat the Nord in their only previous meeting back in 2019 but the pair have moved in largely opposite directions since then. A comeback win over Jaume Munar on Tuesday is a decent start to the Serb’s Auckland campaign but Ruud should have little trouble winning this in straight sets.
