World number 86 Henri Laaksonen continued his excellent record against Benoit Paire in a mammoth three-set victory on Wednesday. The 29-year-old is more at home on the clay but then again so is world number eight Casper Ruud, who comes in from a tough straight-sets defeat to Nick Kyrgios at Indian Wells last time out. 23-year-old Ruud won a seventh career ATP title at the Buenos Aires Open last month but he has yet to take a convincing victory against a top opponent on a hardcourt and Laaksonen will be hot from a thriller. That makes the suitably cautious pick Ruud to win at least a set here but in a match that should be kept out of an accumulator perhaps backing Laaksonen to win at least one is the shrewd move.
