World number eight Casper Ruud avoided a potential banana skin on Friday with a comprehensive victory over Henri Laaksonen. The 23-year-old won the seventh ATP title of his career last month at the Buenos Aires Open, his sixth title on the clay, but a San Diego Open title won last summer on hardcourts is proof of his excellent versatility. Ruud reached the semi-finals of the ATP Finals on his debut before losing to Daniil Medvedev.
ALEXANDER BUBLIK
World number 33 Alexander Bublik came back from a set down to beat an impressive Daniel Elahi Galan on Friday. The 24-year-old recently won his first ATP title at the Montpellier Open early last month and it has been a long time coming after the Kazakh finished runner-up in his first four tour finals.
THE PREDICTION
Both Casper Ruud and Alexander Bublik have won a title already this season and this should be an entertaining battle between two players in form. The hardcourt certainly favours the maverick Bublik over clay maestro Ruud but as always with the Kazakh this result hangs on the accuracy of his two first serves, with second service never an option. If he is in the mood, Bublik should win over the Miami crowd with his eclectic, kamikaze tennis and he only recently beat Ruud in three sets in the Davis Cup qualifiers. Ruud leads this head-to-head 3-1, though, and he remains the favourite to find a way though here so the sensible option is for the Norwegian to win at least a set and the slight risk is taking the same option for Bublik.
