THE PREDICTION

World number two Carlos Alcaraz beat Yannick Hanfmann in straight sets on Friday in his first match back on tour since a semi-final exit to Daniil Medvedev at the US Open. The 20-year-old won his second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in five thrilling sets over Novak Djokovic in a final for the ages but he has been considerably more vulnerable since, losing to Tommy Paul in Canada for a second season running before falling to Djokovic’s revenge in another epic in Cincinnati. World number 18 Lorenzo Musetti made the most of facing Zhuhai champion Karen Khachanov on Friday just three days after the Russian claimed a first title in five years. The 21-year-old has struggled to impose himself against the bigger players on hardcourts until Friday’s impressive opener but Alcaraz should have far too much for him in these conditions. A win apiece on clay, including Musetti’s finest hour in the Hamburg Open final last summer, sees the potential future rivals 1-1 ahead of this clash but Alcaraz beat Musetti in straight sets at Roland-Garros in June and he should do again here.
