THE PREDICTION

This promises to be the match of the tournament so far between world number two Carlo Alcaraz and number 13 Jannik Sinner if their three meetings last season are anything to go by. The pair share a finely-poised 2-2 head-to-head record with Sinner winning on clay at the Umag Open and grass at Wimbledon last summer whilst Alcaraz has taken both of their matches on hardcourts; indoors in Paris in 2021 and most recently in five thrilling sets en-route to the US Open title last September. Each of their three matches last season saw sets go both ways and that looks an excellent alternative to having to try and pick a winner here, especially as Sinner looked so good in defeating defending champion Taylor Fritz on Thursday. Alcaraz beat Felix Auger-Aliassime for the first time on Thursday in an electrifying but altogether more straightforward battle but Sinner is visibly improving at an alarming rate in recent weeks. This is already an exciting rivalry for the present but it will be appointment viewing in tennis’ near future. Take the match to see three sets and consider adding at least a tiebreak, with four played amongst their three meetings last year.
