CARLOS ALCARAZ
18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz’ meteoric rise continues as he beat Gael Monfils, vanquisher of Daniil Medvedev, in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals of Indian Wells without dropping a set. The Spaniard will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 17th no matter the outcome here as he takes an eight-match winning streak into the last eight following his Rio Open title win last month. Alcaraz has lost just once this season and it took world number six Matteo Berrettini to win a deciding set tiebreak in the fifth set at the Australian Open to do it.
CAMERON NORRIE
World number 12 Cam Norrie continued the defence of his shock Indian Wells title from last October with a brilliant tactical diffusing of red-hot Jenson Brooksby on Wednesday. The 26-year-old really came into his own at this stage of the tournament last season, conceding just eight games in back-to-back straight-set victories over Diego Schwartzman and Grigor Dimitrov to reach the final. Norrie won the third ATP title of his career last month at the Delray Beach Open and before finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the Mexican Open.
THE PREDICTION
This is a tough match to call in what could end up a thriller. On the one hand, Cam Norrie continues to exceed expectations on tour after a superb dismissal of Jenson Brooksby – who had just taken out Stefanos Tsitsipas at Indian Wells. Norrie, in turn, beat Tsitsipas in straight sets himself last month at the Mexican Open and he has either won or lost to the winner of his last three tournaments on tour. That could be prophetic, though, as teenage prodigy Carlos Alcaraz takes an eight-match winning streak into the quarter-finals without yet dropping a set in the desert. The Spaniard beat Gael Monfils without facing a break point and he conceded just two games against an in-form Roberto Bautista Agut in the round before. Furthermore, Alcaraz beat Norrie in straight sets at the US Open last season although the Brit did have a particularly bad day at the office.
Alcaraz looks more than a dark horse for the Indian Wells title here on Sunday but he will have to outsmart the crafty defending champion to do so. With three sets a distinct possibility, backing the Spaniard to win one of them is the sensible call here as the likelier of two very capable winners. Underestimate Cam Norrie at your peril but, equally, it is impossible to overestimate this incredible teenager.
