CAMERON NORRIE
World number 12 Cam Norrie is the defending champion at Indian Wells after a hugely surprising run to a first Masters title last October and he got his campaign underway with a solid win over Pedro Martinez on Saturday. The 26-year-old beat Nikoloz Basilashvili from a set down in the final in the desert last season after vastly impressive wins over the likes of Roberto Bautista Agut, Diego Schwartzman and an in-form Grigor Dimitrov. Norrie has since won a third career ATP title at the Delray Beach Open before finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the Mexican Open last month.
NIKOLOZ BASILASHVILI
World number 18 Nikoloz Basilashvili was handed a walkover to the third round after Fabio Fognini pulled out of the second round. The 30-year-old recently finished runner-up to Roberto Bautista Agut at the Qatar Open after starting the season on a six-match losing streak and that kind of stark inconsistency is 100% the normality with the Georgian. Basilashvili stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals of Indian Wells last season on his way to finishing runner-up to Cam Norrie.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a fascinating rematch of last season’s Indian Wells final, with Cam Norrie starting slowly against a blistering Basilashvili last season before the pair drastically swapped intensity. Norrie is surely the solid favourite on recent form with back-to-back finals reached in February and a stunning straight-sets victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals of the Mexican Open, especially as Basilashvili has now not played a match in over three weeks. Norrie constantly exceeds expectations these days, and he should be coming through in straight sets this time around, but it is never wise to discount one of the most unpredictable men on tour in Basilashvili.
