THE PREDICTION
World number 22 Cam Norrie endured a tough 2023 season after two full years of incredible form, with 2022 seeing a run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon ended in four sets by eventual champion Novak Djokovic. The 28-year-old started 2024 off with an eye-catching victory over Alex de Minaur at the United Cup but he was forced to pull out of Auckland, a tournament close to his heart as a former native, with a wrist issue that throws plenty of doubt over his Melbourne campaign. It is worth leaving this match out of an accumulator until Norrie’s fitness can be ascertained but if he takes to court he should have enough to weather some early pressure by Juan Pablo Varillas, also 28, who brought a rusty Alexander Zverev to five sets before defeat at this stage last season.
The Peruvian should be a factor on his favoured clay in the coming months but Norrie beat him in straight sets in the Buenos Aires semi-finals last February to look the creditable favourite in conditions that better-suit him here. Back Norrie to win outright.
TIP: CAM NORRIE TO WIN
