Defending champion Cam Norrie once again came back from a set down to beat Nikoloz Basilashvili in a very similar rematch of the Indian Wells final last October. The 26-year-old has reached at least the quarter-finals in his last three tournaments: losing to eventual champions Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Rotterdam Open and Rafael Nadal in the final of the Mexican Open last time out either side of winning a third ATP title at the Delray Beach Open.
JENSON BROOKSBY
21-year-old Jenson Brooksby provided one of the shocks of the tournament when he came back from a set down to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas on Monday. The American will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 39th and he can overtake fellow Americans Sebastian Korda and Tommy Paul if he reaches the quarter-finals. Brooksby recently finished runner-up to Reilly Opelka at the Dallas Open, his second ATP final after losing to Kevin Anderson at the Hall of Fame Open last season.
THE PREDICTION
Cam Norrie stayed patient to overcome Nikoloz Basilashvili once again at Indian Wells but this first meeting with Jenson Brooksby is a huge test now. Norrie and Brooksby are the two most recent players to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas, with the Brit shocking him in straight sets in the semi-finals of the Mexican Open last month and Brooksby claiming the win of his young career against the world number five on Monday. Players have struggled to figure out Norrie’s unorthodox game over the last year or so and with this match likely to see three sets backing the defending champion to win at least one of them looks the sensible move.
