BOTIC VAN DE ZANDSCHULP
26-year-old Botic Van de Zandschulp is up to a career-high ATP world ranking of 47th after a breakthrough season last year saw him reach the quarter-finals of the US Open. The Dutchman was the only man to take a set off eventual champion Daniil Medvedev in New York last September and he took that form to a first tour semi-final at the St. Petersburg Open late last year.
FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME
World number nine Felix Auger-Aliassime has been exceptional so far in 2022. The 21-year-old won the ATP Cup alongside Denis Shapovalov as part of a youthful Team Canada and he took that form straight into the Australian Open, where he took the first two sets against Daniil Medvedev before losing in five. Auger-Aliassime then, finally, won his first ATP title at the Rotterdam Open with victories over Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals and final, respectively. FAA finished runner-up to Rublev a week later at the Open 13 in Marseille.
THE PREDICTION
In-form Felix Auger-Aliassime has to be considered an outsider for the Indian Wells title here after finally winning his first ATP title at the ninth time of asking last month. The ever-improving Canadian beat Botic Van de Zandschulp in straight sets in their previous meeting in the quarter-finals of the Stockholm Open and there is little to suggest anything different transpires here. The chance that FAA could start a little sluggishly makes backing him to win outright the call inside an accumulator, though. The last four players to beat Auger-Aliassime are ranked above him.
