25-year-old Borna Coric took the first set against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on his first match back on tour for a year in a vastly impressive return before he eventually lost in three sets. The former world number 12 is focusing on the task at hand, playing without pain, for now but if he can get back to anywhere near his best level he should steadily be able to return to the top 40 sooner rather than later. Former world number seven Fernando Verdasco has enjoyed a wonderful career with very little breaks for injury. The 38-year-old veteran qualified well this week for the main draw at the Miami Open, where he lost at the quarter-final stage in back-to-back seasons in 2009 and 2010. The Spaniard has the experience to know if he waits this match out long enough he should see Coric’s energy dissipate as the Croat continues a return to match play, so backing Verdasco to win at least a set here seems the sensible option.
