BORNA CORIC
World number 166 Borna Coric beat Fernando Verdasco in straight sets on Wednesday for a first win on tour since beating Kei Nishikori at the Rotterdam Open last year. The former world number 12 is aiming for rehabilitation this season after such a long injury lay-off with anything else a bonus over the next few months. Coric owns two ATP titles from the Marrakech Open in 2017 and Halle a year later.
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
World number four Alexander Zverev lost his first match since his flagrant outburst at the Mexican Open saw him disqualified. The German lost in three sets to Tommy Paul at this stage of Indian Wells but he and partner Andrey Golubev reached the semi-finals of the Men’s Doubles tournament there before losing to eventual champions Sock and Isner. 24-year-old Zverev enjoyed his best season on tour last year with two Masters titles won at Madrid and Cincinnati, a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games and a second WTA Finals crown added to his now 19 career titles.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating match between old foes Borna Coric and Alexander Zverev, particularly the first set with Zverev coming in off a loss and Coric a relieving first win in over a year. There is plenty of bad feeling surrounding Zverev at this moment in time after his assault of an umpire’s chair in Acapulco went viral and the crowd are likely to back Coric well as a result. Furthermore, the Croat leads this head-to-head record 3-2, although Zverev has won two of their last three meetings both here in 2018 and the US Open in 2020. The sensible option is taking Zverev as outright winner but that is not without its risks, with perhaps a one-off punt on Coric to win the first set a shrewd move.
