Tennis fans everywhere will be hoping to see a big return from former world number four Bianca Andreescu after the Canadian’s latest return from injury halfway through last season and she started with the right attitude in a brilliant comeback victory over Garbine Muguruza. The 2019 US Open champion has needed some serious beating in recent months but world number nine Veronika Kudermetova conceded just three games to Amanda Anisimova in her opening match and the Russian should not be underestimated. 25-year-old Kudermetova’s rise up the rankings will have gone slightly under the radar last season as it was built on sheer consistency rather than titles but she finished runner-up three times last season and adding to her one trophy from Charleston in 2021 will be her main goal in 2023. This is a really tricky call between Andreescu’s higher ceiling but Kudermetova’s more dependable prowess in a first meeting between the two. The suitably sensible option looks to be taking the Russian to earn at least a set to cover for another Andreescu fight-back.
