This looks like one of the higher quality first round clashes at the Australian Open between former world number four Bianca Andreescu and world number 26 Marie Bouzkova. 22-year-old Andreescu capped off an incredible breakthrough season in 2019 with victory at the US Open as a teenager but the Canadian has struggled with an incredible amount of injuries since, with last summer’s return to tour one of her most successful for some time. The current world number 42 came back from a set down to beat Garbine Muguruza at Adelaide 1 before a comprehensive defeat to world number nine Veronika Kudermetova, putting her level at about top 30, but her renowned big-game mentality will always make her a threat to anyone at a Grand Slam no matter how far away she is from injury.
THE PREDICTION
25th seed Marie Bouzkova suffered a shock defeat to Anna Blinkova in the round of 16 in Hobart this week but the Czech should be the better for it after her transformative 2022. Bouzkova produced a stunning run to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in the summer before claiming her first WTA title on home soil in Prague and she ended 2022 a Masters semi-finalist in Guadalajara, where she had also finished runner-up at a 250 event earlier in the year. This is the third tour-level meeting between Andreescu and Bouzkova, with the Canadian taking their Roland-Garros clash in 2019 and the Czech returning the favour at the Phillip Island Trophy here in Melbourne back in 2021. Both matches were closely fought three-setters and that looks a suitable way to avoid picking a winner here, although backing Andreescu to earn at least a set is perhaps the most cautious.
