THE PREDICTION
28-year-old Bernarda Pera enjoyed a transformative few weeks last season when she won her first two WTA titles back-to-back at the Hungarian Open and German Open, setting a career-high WTA world ranking of 42nd soon after. The American beat the likes of Anett Kontaveit and Barbora Krejcikova last summer before her results dried up but she claimed a first win since August in a straight-sets result over Madison Brengle on Tuesday. That win should do wonders for her confidence here but a combative Laura Siegemund will still be a serious test after the German came back from a set down to beat Tereza Martincova in Hobart. Siegemund lost both of her United Cup rubbers two weeks ago but a first win of 2023 should see her amped up here too. Pera should be winning this first tour-level meeting but it is hard to solidly back either player, so take the American to earn at least a set.
