THE LOWDOWN
BERNARDA PERA
World number 105 Bernarda Pera grabbed an excellent victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova on Monday to reach the second round of the Australian Open for a third time. The 27-year-old’s best Grand Slam showing came in a third round exit here back in 2018.
JESSICA PEGULA
27-year-old Jessica Pegula had to come back from a set down to Anhelina Kalinina on Monday but that could be the wake-up call needed for the 21st seed. World number 21 Pegula won her only WTA title to date at the Washington Open back in 2019 but she produced her best tennis on a run to the quarter-finals here last season.
THE PREDICTION
Jessica Pegula is not adverse to a three-set win as one of the grittier players on the WTA tour and an early scare against a good opponent in Anhelina Kalinina should suit her moving forwards. Last year’s quarter-finalist could well concede another set here to Bernarda Pera, with the lower-ranked American impressing against a former top 30 player in Ekaterina Alexandrova, but Pegula can be backed to come through outright, eventually.
