World number 44 Bernarda Pera overcame Laura Siegemund in three sets on Wednesday to back-up a solid opener over Madison Brengle and the American looks like one of the title contenders here in Hobart after the draw opened up. Back-to-back WTA 250 titles in July changed the picture for Pera but she will be seriously relieved to have snapped a six-match losing streak that stretches back to a semi-final exit at the Cleveland Championships in August. 21-year-old Elisabetta Cocciaretto will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 62nd after ousting fellow Italian Jasmine Paolini on Wednesday, conceding just three games to her Hobart doubles partner after an eye-catching first round victory over Alize Cornet. Pera beat Cocciaretto in straight sets at this stage of the Hungarian Open, where she went on to win her first title in July, but this rematch should come a little closer. Back the American to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
