THE PREDICTION

26-year-old Bernabe Zapata Miralles set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 37th this week after a strong run to the round of 16 at the Madrid Masters was eventually ended by Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Spaniard produced a career-best run to the last 16 here last summer before defeat to Alexander Zverev, the ranking points of which have seen him just sneak into the 32nd seed this time around in Paris. Former world number eight Diego Schwartzman takes a poor four-match losing streak into the first round and an even more concerning 5-14 record for the season as a whole. The 30-year-old reached the semi-finals here at his peak back in 2020 but he is far from the player we had become accustomed to on clay over the last five seasons. Zapata Miralles conceded just four games to Schwartzman at the Buenos Aires Open in February and it is hard to see the Argentine snapping out of his fugue state in this tough opener. Back Zapata Miralles to win outright.
