20-year-old Ben Shelton broke the top 100 on tour before leaving the United States but he won his first tour-level outing abroad on Tuesday with an impressive straight-sets result over Sebastian Baez. Shelton will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 89th no matter the outcome here but the American will fancy his chances against anybody this week. 26-year-old Quentin Halys is also playing at his career-high ATP world ranking of 64th after a strong week in Adelaide saw him take eventual champion to two tight tiebreaks. The Frenchman began his successful transition from the Challenger circuit to full tour life last year and it will be interesting to see how far he can rise. A straight-sets victory over Alex Molcan on Tuesday is a great start to his Auckland campaign but there are more questions than answers in this first meeting with a relative unknown. Back Halys to earn at least a set here after his impressive turn against Djokovic last week but leave this match well away from an accumulator.
