BELINDA BENCIC
25-year-old Belinda Bencic set a career-high WTA world ranking of fourth back in 2020, right before the covid-19 pandemic halted her progress. The current world number 28 won Gold Medals in Singles and Women’s Doubles last season at the Tokyo Olympic Games but with no ranking points behind them she has drifted further and further back from her rightful place well inside the top 20. Bencic won the Canadian Masters on her debut as a teenager in 2015 for the first of her four WTA titles and she reached the semi-finals of the US Open before losing to eventual champion Bianca Andreescu in 2019.
MARTA KOSTYUK
World number 55 Marta Kostyuk came back from a set down to beat a tough competitor in Alison Van Uytvanck on Tuesday. The 19-year-old Ukrainian has struggled to impose herself on tournaments this season, perhaps not surprising considering the war in her homeland, but she was exceptional in a three-set defeat to Paula Badosa at the Australian Open to prove once again her huge potential.
THE PREDICTION
This is a really tricky call between two players with top 10 potential. In Bencic’s case that would be a return to the top after a weird 2021 season that saw her greatest achievements in the sport come away from the tour but she has struggled on it in recent times as she takes a three-match losing streak into the Miami Open. Marta Kostyuk has been touted by plenty of players as one to watch in the future, not least by Paula Badosa who squeaked past her at the Australian Open. This first meeting may come down to experience and so in a fairly likely three-setter the sensible option is taking Bencic to win at least one of them.
