29-year-old Heather Watson can break back into the top 100 with a further step of this impressive run at the Miami Open after she stunned Elina Svitolina in the second round. The current world number 115 owns four WTA titles, with her most recent coming at the Mexican Open in 2020 just before the covid-19 pandemic suspended the season.
THE PREDICTION
Heather Watson has twice come back from a set down to win this week against Svitolina and Arantxa Rus before here and that makes taking Belinda Bencic to in outright look the sensible move on paper. However, as with former world number three Svitolina, Bencic is currently in below par form for the season overall and Watson leads this head-to-head record 1-0, albeit winning way back in 2014 against the Swiss teenage qualifier at Indian Wells. This should be a robust, entertaining tussle if Watson’s confidence is up and perhaps taking the match to see three sets is the shrewd option, leaving the winner up to chance. The suitably cautious call, however, is for Bencic to win at least a set as the likelier winner.
