THE LOWDOWN
BELINDA BENCIC
24-year-old Belinda Bencic performed well in a straight sets victory over Kristina Mladenovic on Monday. The 22nd seed won Gold Medals in Singles and Women’s Doubles at the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer for Switzerland but with that not an official WTA tour event she has fallen further down the rankings from her career-high of 4th achieved after reaching the semi-finals of the US Open in 2019.
AMANDA ANISIMOVA
20-year-old Amanda Anisimova was under par in a three-set comeback win over Arianne Hartono on Monday but she takes a six-match winning streak into the second round. The world number 60 win the Melbourne Summer Set 2 event at the start of the year, her second WTA title overall, as she continues to regain the form that saw her burst onto the scene with a run to the Roland-Garros semi-finals in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
Bencic beat Anisimova in three sets in their only previous meeting, at the quarter-finals of the Mallorca Championships back in 2019. This looks set to come as close between the two and in a way it is a shame to see a meeting of this quality so early in the draw between two players whose targets should be the round of 16 at least. On 2022 form, Amanda Anisimova’s winning streak looks crucial here but on first round performances Bencic looks like the likelier woman to come through. It could be one of the best matches of the second round but take this one to see three sets and leave the winner up to chance.
