World number 62 Beatriz Haddad-Maia played well to beat Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in straight sets on Tuesday. The 25-year-old recently reached the semi-finals of the Monterrey Open before losing to eventual champion Leylah Fernandez in straight sets and she has improved steadily on tour over the last few months. 26-year-old Maria Sakkari set a new career-high WTA world ranking of third this week after finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Indian Wells. The Greek beat Paula Badosa, Petra Kvitova and Elena Rybakina en-route to the final, her second this season after also finishing runner-up to Anett Kontaveit at the St. Petersburg Open. Sakkari’s level has needed Kontaveit or Swiatek to oust her from her last three tournaments and she can be backed to beat Haddad-Maia outright with only the slightest hint of an upset here.
