World number 20 Caroline Garcia and number 19 Beatriz Haddad-Maia have both beaten Madison Keys this week to make this first encounter between the two a huge clash for a semi-final place. 29-year-old Garcia’s victory over Keys was especially surprising given her tough 2023 so far but after a strong run to the semi-finals of the Guadalajara Masters last month it could be that the Frenchwoman is coming into form at just the right time to shock the field this week. Garcia set a career-high WTA world ranking of fourth after winning the more prestigious WTA Finals this time last year and that experience in this tournament format plus her excellent record in China, with three of her 11 WTA titles won here, could be the winning formula in Zhuhai. Haddad-Maia has been a part of many of the longest battles on the WTA tour this season, and three sets look much likelier than two here, but back Garcia to utilise all her experience to come through the outright winner.
