THE LOWDOWN

Australia captain Lleyton Hewitt saw his gamble pay off on Friday when he sent out Alexei Popyrin, instead of Jordan Thompson, to face Finland’s trump card Otto Virtanen. World number 40 Popyrin beat the young Finn in straight sets to set the tone for the tie, with an injured Emil Ruusuvuori no match for in form world number 12 Alex de Minaur, and that saw no need for a doubles match as last year’s runners up reached the final once again.

Italy looked in dire need of winning their opening match against Novak Djokovic’s Serbia on Saturday to have any hope of winning their tie but world number four Jannik Sinner stepped up once again to beat the world number one in three thrilling sets – just a week since doing so at the ATP Finals. Djokovic went on to beat Sinner in the final last Sunday in Turin but he looked far from his best in this quick rematch, struggling to enforce himself on the first set and a half before fighting back to force a decider. Lorenzo Musetti took the first set from Miomir Kecmanovic before defeat in the opening tie, giving Italy two must-win matches to decide their fate, and Sinner partnered up well with Lorenzo Sonego in the doubles to out Djokovic and Kecmanovic in emphatic fashion.

THE PREDICTION

Italy captain Filippo Volandri will be hugely confident in the anchor of his line-up in the Davis Cup Finals, with 22-year-old Jannik Sinner the stand-out star of the week in Seville in singles and doubles, That takes the pressure off of one of Matteo Arnaldi and Lorenzo Musetti in the opener as they likely take on Alexei Popyrin, with Lleyton Hewitt seeing little reason to change a winning side now, but the Aussie is probably the favourite in either scenario in indoor hardcourt conditions. Alex de Minaur will give his clash with Jannik Sinner everything as he seeks not only to potentially win the tie 2-0 for Australia but avenge his defeat to the Italian in the Canada Masters final back in August. It is likeliest, though, that Popyrin wins the opening match and Sinner the second to take the Championship tie to a thrilling doubles decider.

Australia’s doubles pair of Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell are of Grand Slam winning quality but Jannik Sinner, who has barely played doubles in his young career, has the quality to return the fierce serves that have been custom in Men’s Doubles matches in this part of the season. Lorenzo Sonego provides solid cover for the world number four, currently enjoying the best season and form of his career, and the pair make a Davis Cup worthy team. Back Italy to just edge this clash off the back of the now truly elite-level Jannik Sinner, who has beaten Novak Djokovic three times in November – twice in singles and once in doubles.

BETTING TIP: ITALY TO WIN 2-1
