• It was a tale of two tiebreaks for Daniil Medvedev in his second round-robin match at the ATP Finals against Rafael Nadal, with the Russian taking the first but losing the decider in an epic comeback from his opponent.
• The 23-year-old managed to break the serve of the world number one twice, which is no mean feat, but he also had his own serve broken four times despite posting 21 aces in three sets.
• Medvedev was the victor in his only meeting with defending ATP Finals champion Alexander Zverev this year, beating him in straight sets in the final of the Shanghai Masters last month.

ALEXANDER ZVEREV

• Alexander Zverev became the second player to fall foul of a buoyant Stefanos Tsitsipas and ended up losing quite convincingly to the young Greek in straight sets, winning just five games to Tsitsipas’ 12.
• The German number one and world number seven won just 31% on his second serve which shows the calibre to which Tsitsipas is playing at the ATP Finals, and Zverev’s mentality has been called into question yet again.
• The 22-year-old reigning champion will know, though, that he also lost his second of three round-robin matches at last year’s ATP Finals and he is well-equipped to progress here by either beating Daniil Medvedev, or by losing in three sets and if Tsitsipas beat Nadal earlier in the day.

THE PREDICTION

Alexander Zverev will be all the more up for this match after a sorry display against Stefanos Tsitsipas and seems to be in luck as he faces the late-season’s world beater, Daniil Medvedev, at a time when the Russian’s game is not quite clicking. Whether Medvedev is simply exhausted after playing, and winning, the most matches on tour this year, or whether his next gen peers have upped their game, it does not look good for him. Medvedev can still progress by beating Zverev in two sets and hoping Tsitsipas beats Rafael Nadal, which at this rather unpredictable tournament could well happen. However, it could be that neither of these players progress if Medvedev beats Zverev and Nadal beats Tsitsipas – and this is also wholly within the logic of this tournament. With so many permutations, this match should hold its own as a spectacle between two future Grand Slam champions. The form here leads towards the reigning champion, but Daniil Medvedev’s success this season cannot be ignored and he can edge this contest to make the qualification process as confusing as possible.
