World number 32 Aslan Karatsev started 2022 off on fire with a brilliant campaign at the Sydney Tennis Classic resulting in his third ATP title. The 28-year-old has struggled to reach that intensity since, though, as he takes a three-match losing streak into the second round of the Miami Open after losing in straight sets to Steve Johnson at Indian Wells. World number 45 Ugo Humbert beat Daniil Medvedev in his first match of the season to promise much but he contracted covid-19 at the Australian Open and has also struggled with his form since. The Frenchman grabbed just his second win of the season in a three-set victory over Aljaz Bedene and that should do his confidence the world of good but Karatsev is still just about the favourite here. The Russian won their previous encounter in straight sets at the Madrid Open last season, so backing him to win at least a set in this close call seems the sensible move.
