World number 22 Aslan Karatsev started 2022 off in perfect fashion with a blistering campaign at the Sydney International. However, the 28-year-old was shocked in the third round of the Australian Open by Adrian Mannarino and he has since won just one of five matches. The Russian burst onto the scene early last season as the first qualifier to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open in over 40 years and he has since won three ATP titles in total.
STEVE JOHNSON
World number 115 Steve Johnson beat Daniel Altmaier in straight sets on Friday to reach the second round of Indian Wells for only the fifth time. The 32-year-old once reached the quarter-finals of a Masters event at the 2016 Cincinnati Open, the same season he set a career-high ATP world ranking of 21st.
THE PREDICTION
There is a real scent of an upset about this match with world number 22 Aslan Karatsev starting the year like a train but seemingly over-exerting himself in January. The 28-year-old’s last five defeats have come against players ranked outside the top 50 and Steve Johnson may likely never have a better chance at defeating him than right now in his first match back at Indian Wells. Johnson will be well-backed by a partisan crowd as the American underdog and, through no fault of Karatsev’s own, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Backing Johnson to snatch at least a set seems a reasonable option here but Karatsev to come through outright remains what should happen.
