ARYNA SABALENKA
World number five Aryna Sabalenka took the first set against Jasmine Paolini before a shock defeat in three to the Italian at Indian Wells two weeks ago. The 23-year-old is still seeking rhythm on the most powerful serve on tour, with 10 double faults against Paolini a recurring problem that hampered her January this season. Sabalenka’s 10 career WTA titles include three Masters events from the Wuhan Open in 2018 and 2019 and last season’s Madrid Open.
IRINA-CAMELIA BEGU
World number 70 Irina-Camelia Begu dropped the first set tiebreak against Hailey Baptiste on Wednesday but then rallied well to concede just two more games in victory. The 31-year-old won the most recent of her four WTA titles at the Bucharest Open in her native Romania back in 2017.
THE PREDICTION
It is well worth leaving former world number two Aryna Sabalenka’s matches out of accumulators for the time being as the 23-year-old continues to struggle with her service motion, on which her entire game is built around. Irina-Camelia Begu has enough experience to know there will be plenty of break opportunities in this match if Sabalenka double faults as often as she has on average this season and her recent results, including a three-set defeat to Maria Sakkari last month, suggests she can win at least a set here. Take that option for a reasonable one-off, leaving the winner up to anyone’s guess.
