19-year-old Arthur Fils set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 34th after a strong run to the semi-finals of the Auckland Classic last week, where he suffered a shock loss to surprise eventual champion Alejandro Tabilo. The Frenchman won his maiden ATP title on clay a the Lyon Open last May but his best efforts have come on hardcourts so far, in what has been a vastly impressive breakthrough on tour, with a series of semi-finals early in the year and runners-up finishes in Antwerp and at the Next Gen ATP Finals.
Former world number 35 Jiri Vesely has struggled to stay fit long enough to make any use of some eye-catching results over the last few seasons, most notably in his incredible shock victory over Novak Djokovic at the Dubai Tennis Championships in 2022. The Czech remains a serious threat at this level when fit and he proved that in New York last season with a stunning upset over 20th seed Francisco Cerundolo taking him through to the third round. Fils should have enough energy to weather some storms in this first encounter with Vesely but four or even five sets feel likelier than three. Take Fils to win outright.
