23-year-old Anna Kalinskaya will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 84th after beating in-form Alize cornet in three sets on Friday. The Russian was forced to retire from a semi-final match with Sloane Stephens at the Guadalajara Open last month with the match finely poised at one set apiece.
SORANA CIRSTEA
World number 27 Sorana Cirstea beat Ajla Tomljanovic well in straight sets on Friday to reach the third round of Indian Wells for successive seasons. The Romanian set a career-high WTA world ranking of 21st back in 2013 and she could well break that almost a decade on if she continues in this form, with a second title won last season at the Istanbul Open.
THE PREDICTION
This looks a tight one between two players in decent form, especially Anna Kalinskaya over the last few weeks. In a first meeting between the two it seems a sensible if uninspiring pick to take Cirstea to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance but this could be the shrewd move given the Russian’s three-set victory over Alize Cornet.
